Editorial Services

With an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph and more than five years of experience as a manuscript evaluator for the Writers’ Union of Canada, Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia, and individual authors across Canada and the US, I am skilled at offering both substantive and structural feedback on short stories, personal essays, and novel-length projects. My editorial approach is rooted in careful noticing, open-ended questions, and a deep care for each writer’s voice. Nobody knows your story better than you, and I will always strive to respect your creative vision while working together in a spirit of generosity and collaboration to help you clarify and hone your chosen narrative for a wider audience.

As a queer and nonbinary writer, I am particularly interested in working with authors who are expanding 2SLGBTQIA+ representation in literature. I am also available to consult with clients seeking sensitivity readers for storylines involving queer, gender diverse, and neurodivergent characters. For those wishing to learn more about the role sensitivity readers can play in your writing process, I recommend Mya Nunnally’s excellent article on BookRiot.com.

Rates

Standard editorial packages include an initial Zoom call to discuss your writing project and specific feedback goals, both inline comments and a summary letter of broader considerations for the manuscript as a whole, and a final wrap-up call to answer any follow-up questions and offer recommendations on future revisions.

Rates for manuscript evaluations and sensitivity reading vary by length of the received project and include a baseline consultation fee of $100.00 CAD as well as a reading fee of $0.02 cents per word. For example:

Project LengthConsultation FeeReading FeeTotal Cost
500 words$100.00$10.00$110.00
5,000 words$100.00$100.00$200.00
50,000 words$100.00$1,000.00$1,100.00
150,000 words$100.00$3,000.00$3,100.00

Clients will receive an itemized invoice payable by e-transfer following our initial meeting, as well as a mutually agreed upon timeline for reading and returning feedback on your work. I am happy to provide a letter of endorsement for any writers who plan to apply for outside funding such as Canada Council grants to cover my fee. In this case, a finalized editorial schedule will be established once funding decisions have been announced.

Looking for more in-depth advice on your writing journey? I am also open to developing a custom mentorship plan with a mix of craft discussions, creative prompts, writing feedback, and publishing advice over a sustained period of time.

Please note: My editorial feedback is proudly 100% human generated by my own brain! 🤓 I do not utilize generative AI in any aspects of my writing or consulting services, nor do I work with authors who do. 🤖

Grant Applications & Query Letter Reviews

Are you in need of funding for your next writing project? Or perhaps you’ve got a polished manuscript that feels ready for publication, but you’re unsure of your next steps? My past jury work and successful grant applications with both the Canada Council for the Arts and Arts Nova Scotia have given me a keen sense of the current funding landscape and how to craft a compelling pitch that will stand out from the crowd. For emerging writers, my skills in market research and attention to detail can also help you to identify ideal publishers for your work and tailor your query letters to their specific preferences.

Rates

All grant applications and query letters are assessed at a standard rate of $250.00 CAD. This includes a review of your project pitch, CV, and support materials, brief editorial notes on any writing samples, advice on common pitfalls to avoid, and a close analysis of your specific funding or publishing opportunity to help ensure your application meets all stated guidelines and formatting requirements.
